My Experience with Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy

What is Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT)
Over the past several years it has become the Standard for treating several debilitating conditions. The patient is placed in a pressurized chamber while breathing 100% oxygen. Through a series of daily treatments, the building of new blood vessels into damaged tissue is enhanced. Daily treatments usually take two hours. The patients watch DVD’s, TV, listen to music or sleep during their daily treatments. The condition for my treatment was incision that popped open in the middle and was not healing. They called it a flap wound. The first 3 or 4 times I was rather paniky as I believe I may be claustrophobic, the time passed ever so slow. Knowing you are trapped for 2 hours does funny things to your mind and body. It gets easier each time, as I am learning to relax and watch a movie and move around as much as possible knowing the technician is watching should I really have a problem. I have found it has already helped me with a knee problem that was bothering me before the cancer surgery. I hope that I am getting younger with all the oxygen!
HBOT is effective for traumatic brain injury, strokes of all types, cerebral palsy, autism, near drowning, near hanging, birth injury, toxic brain injury, ischemic/anoxic/hypoxic brain injury and encephalopathy, coma, persistent vegetative state (the apallic state), genetic disorders such as mitochondrial disease, multiple sclerosis, lyme disease, reflex sympathetic dystrophy (RSD), acute and chronic tinnitus or hearing loss or vertigo, chronic fatigue, prevention of brain injury from cardiac surgery, fibromyalgia, sports injuries, immune system disorders, oral infections and non-healing sockets, chronic brain decompression illness, and others.
The more typically situations include: crush injury, osteoradionecrosis and soft tissue radionecrosis (brain, rectum, bladder, etc.), gangrene, compromised flaps and grafts, carbon monoxide poisoning, decompression sickness, air embolism, the flesh-eating bacteria, burns, acute bone infections in immunocompromised patients, brain abscess, cyanide poisoning, plastic surgery failures, non-healing wounds, diabetic ulcers, osteomyelits (chronic refractory bone infection), limb salvage, peripheral vascular disease, arterial insufficiency ulcers, venous stasis ulcers that have failed standard therapy, vasculitis ulcers, severe acute blood loss, and acute traumatic ischemia (damage to blood vessels).
How does it work?

The patient breaths 100% oxygen while the entire body is totally immersed in 100%oxygen. Increased pressure combined with the increase in oxygen content dissolves oxygen into the blood and all other body tissues and fluid at up to 20 times the normal concentration-high enough to sustain life with no blood at all and even with the heart stopped.
Hyperbaric treatments are painless, but the patient may experience a sensation of “fullness” in the ears, similar to driving down a mountain, flying, or scuba diving.
Once a patient is in the chamber and the door closed, the oxygen begins to circulate. This starts a gradual increase in pressure-called compression. There may be some slight warmth, but that is temporary.. Near the end of the treatment, the technician will gradually decrease pressure that was added at the beginning. This is decompression, which generally lasts 10-15 minutes. There may be a slight “popping “sensation in the ears adjustment. It is usually easier to equalize ear pressure during decompression than during the compression phase.
Preparations before HBO Therapy.

Some medications are not compatible with HBO. Important to notify HBO technician should symptoms of cold, flu etc. occurs. Nicotine is not compatible with HBO. The patient will have to stop the use. Cosmetics, hair spray, nail polish, perfume, or shaving lotion containing petroleum, alcohol or oil base are not allowed while in the HBO chamber. Patients are provided with 100 % cotton gowns to wear during treatment.

MALIGNANT MELANOMA - MY PERSONAL EXPERIENCE

What is Melanoma? It is a type of skin cancer. It can be life threatening disease! It can grow like a weed over growing the garden. Melanoma begins on the surface of the skin where it is easy to see and treat. If given time it can grow down into the skin, ultimately reaching the blood and lymphatic vessels, spreading through the body, causing life threatening illness. Curable if detected early, but can be fatal if allowed to progress and spread. No one knows the exact causes of melanoma. Certain risk factors, like having many moles, increases the risk of developing melanoma. Fair skin that burns or freckles easily. People who had more than one of the common skin cancers. A family history of melanoma, weakened immune system, severe, blistering sunburns. Experts believe that much of the worldwide increase in melanoma is related to an increase in the amount of time people spend in the sun.
I had a pulled muscle in my knee from tennis and over exercising, so I was icing and rubbing pain medicine to my leg when I felt a mole size bump on the back of my leg. I could not see it so I asked a neighbor if she thought I should have it checked! (She was a retired nurse) “Yes, I think it looks questionable!” That day I took my mother to her doctor’s appointment and on leaving I asked the doctor did he think I should have my mole checked. He insisted I see the dermatologist immediately. I got the next available appointment and he immediately numbed my leg and cut out a portion to send to the lab. The hole was approximately inch. My neighbor told me the mole was about the size of a pencil eraser and half. It was also irregular in size and the color was pink to lavender. The biopsy was sent out of town to a lab, I was very confident that I had no reason to worry. Four days later I was called into the doctor’s office to discuss the results. Boy was the news a bomb shell! I tested positive for cancer! The next step was to decide on a surgeon to do the surgery. I choose to use a local doctor who had experience in the area that I needed. Surgery was immediately scheduled and the process of having lab work, and complete physical exam began.
Surgery to remove a melanoma removes the entire melanoma along with a border of normal –appearing skin. The width of the border of normal skin removed depend s on the depth of the melanoma. Additional tissue, usually skin and fat is also removed from under the melanoma. My excision was 17x8x10 mm. I also had lymph nodes removed in the groin area. It was interesting to observe the dye going through my leg in the Nuclear Medicine Lab. It had a big camera attached like a MRI machine where the technician mapped the lymph glands for the surgeon. After that I was sent to the Ultra Sound room with the Cardiologist mapped the glands with what he called fish hooks that he pushed into about 4 of the glands so the surgeon would be able to find. This part is called Sentinel Node surgery. I am now ready for the surgery! Approximately 2 hours later I am in the recovering room! My recovery is good, I have trouble sitting, sleeping and walking, but my stitches are healing very quickly. Thank goodness I am a quick healer and I have been doubling up on my Shaklee Vivix and Nutriferon. I have to have my sister in law, who had a surprise breast cancer treatment last month, come 2x a day and change my bandages. We both feel very blessed to have been diagnosed with negative results. She has to do Radiation for 6 weeks (every day). Fortunately I do not need any more treatment. I just need complete inspections with the dermatologist couple times a year.

What you can do to reduce your risks!
• Use sunscreen- SPF 15 or higher
• Stay out of the sun between 10 a.m – 4 p.m ( Find Shade)
• Cover up ..protect yourself from the sun
• Wear a hat that covers your ears and neck
• Wear sunglasses to protect your eyes.
• Avoid indoor tanning
• DON’T SMOKE

CHECK YOURSELF! CHECK YOURSELF OFTEN! See your dermatologist if concerned! Early detection is so important! I feel blessed.

My leg after cancer and gland removal

REMEMBER, ANY MOLE (PIGMENTED SPOT OR GROWTH) THAT UNDERGOES A SIGNIFICANT CHANGE IN SIZE, SHAPE, OR COLOR—OR THAT CAUSES SYMPTOMS OF ITCHING OR BLEEDING— SHOULD BE SUSPECTED OF BEING A MELANOMA.

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT TYPE2 DIABETES AND EXERCISE

Type 2 diabetes,is a chronic condition that affects the way your body metabolizes sugar(glucose), your body's main source of fuel.
When you have type 2 diabetes, your body is resistant to the effects of insulin-a hormone that regulates the movement of sugar into your cells-or your body doesn't produce enough insulin to maintain a normal glucose level. Untreated, the consequences of type 2 diabetes can be life-threatening.
There's no cure for type 2 diabetes, but you can manage-or even prevent the condition. Start by eating healthy foods, exercising and maintaining a healthy weight. If diet and exercise aren't enough, you may need diabetes medications or insulin therapy to manage your blood sugar.
Healthy lifestyle choices can help you prevent the disease. And if you've already been diagnosed with diabetes, the same healthy lifestyle choices can help you prevent potentially serious complications

  • Eat Healthy Foods. Choose foods low in fat and calories. Focus on fruits, vegetables and whole grains. For every 1,000 calories you consume, try to have at least 14 grams of fiber, because fiber helps control blood sugar levels.

  • Get More Physical Activity. Aim for 30 minutes of moderate physical activity a day. Take a brisk daily walk. Ride your bike. Swim laps. If you can't fit in a long workout, break it up into smaller sessions spread throughout the day.

  • Lose Excess Pounds. If you're overweight, losing 5-10 percent of your body weight can reduce the risk of diabetes and significantly improve how your body uses insulin. It can also, lower your blood pressure, raise your HDL cholesterol and decrease your risk of type 2 diabetes. To keep your weight in a healthy range, focus on permanent changes to your eating and exercise habits. Motivate yourself by remembering the benefits of losing weight, such as a healthier heart, more energy and improved self-esteem.

Without exercise, people have the tendency to become obese. Once they are obese, they have a bigger chance of accumulating type 2 diabetes.

What are some to the symptoms to look for in diabetes type2? They many develop very slowly, so watch for weight loss, hunger, fatigue, blurred vision, slow healing sores or frequent infections, areas of darkened skin.

Supplements that can provide additional value such as Omega-3 fatty acids they contribute to healthier triglyceride and blood pressure levels. Magnesium supports healthy blood pressure too. For weight management, soy protein based meal replacement shakes along with key nutrients such as chromium and green tea which should be part of your daily life. Need your energy to stay up, your cravings stay down try Cinch3-1Boost. Work with your doctor as you make lifestyle changes so he can monitor your weight, blood glucose, cholesterol and blood pressure levels to make sure your lifestyle changes are working. Many have found the polyphenols in muscadine grape skins have a positive effect in heart disease, high cholesterol , diabetes, metabolic syndrome, and other inflammatory conditions. Check out the benefits of Resveratrol!

BREAST CANCER - WHEN WAS YOUR LAST MAMMOGRAM?

With Breast Cancer Awareness this month and the fact that my sister-in-law was just diagnosed with breast this month, I felt many would like to know more about steps to take to cut the risks, and review some of the causes of cancer.
Let’s talk, about what are your chances? Do you need to be tested! She went in for a routine check up and was asked how long it had been since her last mammogram? It has been several years so she decided to go ahead and have one. Wow, what a surprise to learn she had a small tumor. So never say this will never happen to me!Get your mammogram!
Updates from John Hopkins say that every person has cancer cells in the body. These cancer cells do not show up in the standard tests until they have multiplied to a few billion. When doctors tell cancer patients that there are no more cancer cells in their bodies after treatment, it just means the tests are unable to detect the cancer cells because they have not reached the detectable size. Cancer cells occur between 6 to more than 10 times in a person’s lifetime. If you have cancer it means you have multiple nutritional deficiencies. Could be to environment, food, genetic, and lifestyle factors. You need to change your diet, and add supplements that will strengthen the immune system. An effective way to battle cancer is to starve the cancer cells by not feeding it with the foods it needs to multiply.
What do Cancer Cells feed on: Sugar is a cancer-feeder. Sugar substitutes like NutraSweet, Equal, and Spoonful are made with Aspartame and it is harmful. Milk causes the body to produce mucus. Cancer feeds on mucus. Cancer cells thrive in an acid environment. A meat-based diet is acidic and you should eat fish, and chicken. A diet made of Fresh vegetables, whole grains; seeds and nuts help put the body into an alkaline environment. Avoid coffee, tea, and chocolate. Green tea is a better alternative and has cancer-fighting properties.
Cancer is a disease of the mind, body, and spirit! Positive attitude will help the cancer patient be a survivor. Learn to relax and enjoy life! Don’t forget cancer cells cannot thrive in an oxygenated environment.
There is no proven link between breast cancer and household products, such as water bottles, soap and chemicals. Many consumers, activists are concerned that a variety of goods contain hormone disruptor's, chemicals that when absorbed into the body can mimic or interfere with hormones such as estrogen. Some researchers believe that chemicals with estrogen characteristics can cause normal breast cells to divide, which may lead to increased breast cancer risk, says S.Snedeker, Phd,at Cornell University. Individual products contain only small amounts of questionable chemicals such as agents in cosmetics, household products; some plastic will cause breast cancer.
With prevention in mind here are ways we can reduce the risk of developing cancer:
Avoid tobacco products and second-hand smoke, Achieve and maintain healthy weight, exercise at least 30-40 minutes a day several times a week. Eat more fruits, vegetables and whole grains (Fresh is the Best), limit alcohol intake, be aware and protect yourself from ultraviolet radiation from the sun. Reduce your everyday exposure to potentially-toxic environmental chemicals in the home, know your family history and get screened and choose your dietary supplements wisely.
Resveratrol, a nutrient found in red wine, keeps estrogen from causing breast cancer in test tube studies. Prolonged exposure to estrogen is a major risk factor for breast cancer. Resveratrol is a naturally occurring antioxidant found in the skins of red grapes, red wine, red or purple grape juice, peanuts, blueberries and cranberries.

BIRD FLU....SWINE FLU...WHAT IS NEXT?

I arrived in Vietnam as the Bird Flu hit. A ban on live bird imports had taken effect in many parts of the world. Vietnam was the hardest hit country. Local farmers who raised poultry on a small scale had to destroy their flocks. We were advised not to eat eggs or chicken. The restaurants, even Kentucky Fried Chicken had crossed chicken off the menu. Everyone was very careful with sanitation washing hands and avoiding crowds when possible. I was so happy that I had prepared myself with Shaklee's Nutriferon. Nutriferon increases the production of interferon in the body. A powerful breakthrough in immune system science. Fortunately, I had extra with me to share with my friends: otherwise we might have gotten really sick. Finding medical help would not have been easy.

Now we have the Swine Flu with a lot more information on dealing with a virus infection that can cause a wide range of symptoms including fever, cough, sore throat, body aches, headaches, chills and fatigue. Some people have reported diarrhea and vomiting. Those with chronic medical conditions are more likely to develop sever illness.

The Flu spreads in the following ways:
From person to person through respiratory droplets from coughs & sneeze
When you touch respiratory droplets on another or an object or you own
mouth or nose.
Keep hands away from your eyes, nose & mouth
Seek Emergency Medical Care When:
You have difficulty breathing or chest pain
The person has purple or blue discoloration of the lips
Unable to keep liquids down and is vomiting
Shows signs of dehydration...dizziness, absence of urination or in infants
lack of tears when they cry.
seizures
Less responsive than normal or becomes confuse.
Do I Use A Face Mask? Yes, do so and spend the least amount of time possible
in close contact with infected person.
Wash hands often especially after touching used tissues!
Stay home for 7 days after the start of the illness and fever is gone.
Get plenty of rest.
Drink fluids..electrolyte beverages especially for infants. Keep from being
dehydrated.
Cover cough and sneeze...cough and sneeze into your elbow.
Clean hands with soap and water.
Be watchful for emergency warning signs that indicate you need to seek
medical attention.

Testimony of longevity

Doris A.Smith , age 95 gives her testimony on how she has been able to age gracefully, while
Others have more problems. She says age isn’t important unless you are cheese! If you are blessed to reach ninety-five you would like to be able to walk, take care of yourself be in reasonably good health.
In order to be in this kind of shape you need to start early in life….with exercise, good nutrional supplements, take care of not spending too much time in the sun, take good care of your skin..use products that are toxin free. Need to keep your weight down, eat proper, and get good night’s sleep.

Stay active with friends and family, be involved activities that keep the brain functioning. Have a sense of humor, laugh at lot, have a positive attitude.
Sometimes when we reach middle age we feel we might be following apart! We wonder what is happening…it is never too late to get started with the right regiment. I discovered the Shaklee supplements late in live but what difference they made in my life. I am still able to go to the gym couple times a week, where I work on the walker, the bicycle, and do some arm exercises Two to Three times a week I play bridge, at age 84 taught myself how to use the computer. I am able keep up through email with friends and family.
In January of 2009 I fell and broke 4 ribs! I feel the the Shaklee product Vivix really helped me with endurance and energy to get out of the assisted living back to the comfort of my own home where I live alone and can take care of myself. I feel it replaced and built up my cells surrounding my ribs for a quicker recovery! I feel I am living life to the fullest at my age!

AGING IS ABOUT HEALTH & LIFESTYLE!

As the days go by you may notice a few wrinkles, a few more pounds, maybe a couple of gray hairs. You might want to consider plastic surgery but you don't have the money. You want to change how you look but you don't know how.

Looking your absolute best is a matter of taking good care of yourself. You will feel more confident by improving your physical health; it will also make you stand out in a crowd. When you are healthy aging has fewer limitations.

Your food routine can influence whether or not your yawn in the afternoon will keep you from hitting the gym at the end of the day. Take a good look at what you are eating! I've been told that 9 servings of fruits and vegetables each day will help you look younger. Eat fewer calories a day, have smaller portions, don't over eat.

If you want to peel off the years to look younger? Preventions is the major way to change! I like to start the day with my Cinch Shake and Nutritional Supplements! I then head off to the gym or depending on the weather I might hit the tennis courts, golf course or take a nice long bike ride. My lunch consists of the Cinch Shake or meal replacement bar, topping it off with the Cinch Green Tea! No more yawning and thinking of naps! Dinner is very simple, usually baked or broiled chicken, green salad, vegetables, and brown rice! I have a selection of tasty, low calorie receipts, which the entire family will love. Don't forget to add fresh fruit and lots of water all day.
People who have a goal in life-passion,purpose, positive outlook and humor -live longer!~
We need to experience life to its fullest-with lots of passion and purpose. Try new things!!
